About Day Rate Finance

Built by someone who spent 30 years on the inside of the UK mortgage market — before becoming a contractor himself.

Day Rate Finance exists because the mainstream mortgage market consistently undervalues contractors. Banks trained to assess PAYE income don't know what to do with a day rate. The result is contractors being offered less than they can genuinely afford, or being turned away altogether. We fix that — by knowing exactly how lenders think, and using that knowledge to position every application for the strongest possible outcome.

Chris

Chris spent over 30 years working as a senior IT contractor across the UK's major mortgage lenders — including Barclays, RBS, Virgin Money, and Nationwide. During that time he sat inside the mortgage operations, credit decisioning, and underwriting systems of institutions that between them write hundreds of thousands of mortgages every year.

That background is unusual. Most mortgage brokers know what lenders publish. Chris knows why they publish it — the internal logic behind affordability models, the parameters that credit teams actually use, and the points in an application where contractor income is most likely to be challenged or reframed.

After three decades contracting inside the financial sector, Chris made the transition from contractor to business owner — and immediately encountered the same mortgage problem that affects every contractor in the UK. Despite a strong track record and substantial day-rate income, mainstream lenders and generalist brokers struggled to assess him accurately. He spent time finding a route through it that worked. Then he built Day Rate Finance so that other contractors would have that route from day one.

Chris holds full CII qualifications in mortgage advice and equity release (CF1, CF6, ER1), meeting the FCA's qualification requirements for regulated mortgage activity.

"I've been on both sides of the mortgage desk — inside the lender, and sitting across from one as a contractor trying to get a fair deal. I set up Day Rate Finance because that gap shouldn't exist."

How We Produce Our Content

All content on Day Rate Finance is written or reviewed by a qualified specialist. We do not publish automated content, AI-generated articles, or copy produced without subject matter oversight.

Our guides and information pages are reviewed for accuracy against current FCA regulatory guidance, lender criteria, and market conditions. Pages are updated when material changes occur — including significant shifts in lender criteria, regulatory changes, or rate environment changes that affect contractor applicants.

Where we reference lender behaviour, criteria, or market data, we do so on the basis of direct broker-level lender relationships and published criteria — not third-party aggregation.

Content reviewed and updated regularly. If you spot anything out of date, contact us.
